Tailoring Patterns to You: Using Gauge and Measurements to Tweak Your Sweaters with Allison Jane Knits

Pattern designers work off a database of sample sizes to create pattern sizing and measurements, but so frequently human bodies aren't standard. Just because you select the bust measurement that works for your body, doesn't mean the sleeves will be the correct size, or the yoke will have the depth you need. It's often easy enough to shorten or lengthen the body of a sweater pattern, but what about more complicated tasks, like shortening shaped sleeves? This class will use a simple top down raglan pullover pattern to illustrate how to combine body measurements, gauge swatches, and measurements of your favorite sweater (that one that fits perfectly!) to tweak a sweater pattern to work for your body, or even grade up or down to sizes not covered by the designer.

Class will cover:
Working flat in two-color brioche
Techniques of working in the round in two-color brioche
Basic increases and decreases in two-color brioche
Terminology related to techniques covered

Skill Details:
Students should know how to knit, purl, work in the round, and preferably have knitted a sweater before; though this is not a requirement. Students should make a gauge swatch in the round by casting on 48-56 stitches and working in the round for at least 5?; do not block the swatch before class. Swatch should measure at least 4? wide when laid flat (8? total circumference), and 5? tall.
Materials for students to bring: Woolly sport-weight yarn Needles to work in the round (DPNs or circular needle for magic loop) that give an approximate gauge of 21 stitches and 32 rows in Stockinette stitch Ruler and tape measure Notebook and pencil Favorite sweater that fits how you like!
